Journal
of PT Conlan my Great grandfather on my Mother's side. I've only started to
transcribe everything
he has written in his Journal here and other material that my Uncle Jim
graciously sent us for a short time.
The Journal is written not only from back to front but from front to back so I
am going to try and put the
same months and years together. I got to know a Great Grandparent that I would
have never known had there
not been this Journal. It begins with Peter being 18 years old at home on their
farm near Holy Cross,
Pottowatamie county Kansas. I made the names of people that lived near them
larger for other families
looking up histories. I tried to copy his spelling faithfully. I left out words
that I was unable to read.
This tiny picture is all I have of him near the age he was when the diary was
written.

I also have some maps of the
farmland and owners near Emmet township where this farm was located. Click on
the
thumbnail to enlarge the image.

folks began to flock in so as to go
home in time to let the young come at night. They all brought beautiful
presents. evening came bringing with it loads and loads of young from all parts
of the county. The dancing
began and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves very much. I danced first with
M.S. 2d with Mary O'Conor. I was elected for bartender and passed the beer
around as fast as
possible. everybody seemed bent upon enjoying themselves and undoubtably did.
M.S. and I ate supper together. The morn began to dawn and the people began to
disperse. After a
night of enjoyment it was rather dark and misty.
